Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Central Executive Council, Tura, Meghalaya, GSU Nagaland Zone and Nagaland Garo Tribal Council (NGTC) have appealed to the NSCN (I-M) to “accommodate” Garo tribes of Nagaland along with the other recognized tribes of Nagaland in the event of final settlement of the “Indo-Naga” peace process.
GSU Nagaland Zone president, Cliff D. Sangma informed that a GSU delegation met NSCN (I-M) kilo kilonser, Rh. Raishing and MIP kilonser, V. Horam on April 4 over the issue. “We have urged the esteem Government of People’s Republic of Nagalim to accommodate the Garo tribe as Garo tribe in Nagaland is also an aboriginal tribe of the state and recognized by the Nagaland government”, Sangma said.
At the meeting with Naga Hoho on April 5 at Kohima, GSU team urged the Hoho to consider Garos of Nagaland as one of their own brothers among other recognized tribes in Nagaland. Further, highlighting the problems faced by the indigenous Garo people, GSU Central Executive Council claimed that Garos of Nagaland have been reeling in a state of backwardness, both educationally, socially or politically, since the community has been marginalized into a minority tribe in Nagaland.
