Taking note of Kohima village youth organisation (KVYO)’s appeal to check butchers selling “age old horses and ponies as beef”, the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) has stated that it would be writing to butchers’ union to check their own members selling adulterated meat.
KMC sources said that if butchers desired to sell horse or pony meat they could do so by obtaining separate permit for horse meat instead of adulterating and selling it as beef.
Sources stated the municipal council began investigation and found out those responsible involved in such practice, adding that the liable person has been warned.
While stating that for some people horse or pony meat was a delicacy, KMC sources, however, said that meat was allowed to be sold with approval from veterinary doctor attached to the civic body.
Highlighting that role of veterinary department was crucial at quarantine check gates, sources said veterinary department was to monitor the health of animals, check condition of slaughterhouse, carry out ante mortem and post mortem check up, after that only animals were to be bought in the market.
KMC sources lamented that there was only one veterinary doctor attached to KMC though minimum requirement was at least two doctors. Sources also said Dimapur has an abattoir attached with veterinary doctors, but Kohima did not have such facility.
