Expressing its concern over the delay in posting an SDEO at Tobu sub-division for the last three months, Tobu Area Students’ Union (TASU) has now set a 30-day deadline for authorities concerned to depute a committed official to the post.
Pointing out that the post of SDEO has been lying vacant since February this year, the union wondered what type of teachers’ performance is the authorities expecting when head of the department has been absent for such a long duration.
The union expressed its disappointment at the education department for failing to understand the grievances faced by the teachers as well as student community.
According to a press release issued by the students’ body, 45 government-run and eight private schools are functioning under SDEO Tobu sub-division.
TASU pointed out that with the absence of SDEO, assignments for file management of ministerial staff like AEO, SIS and JEOs are often delayed, causing lots of hardship in addressing the needs of the students. And as Tobu sub-division is located 118 km away from Mon district headquarters, it becomes more difficult for teachers in-charge and VECs to travel, especially during the monsoon season, just for doing paper works at Mon town, it added.
Alleging that there are proxy teachers and headmasters in many schools where persons who failed to qualify HSLC exams have been recruited, the union said the matter required urgent intervention from higher authorities like SDEO as efforts from the student community alone could not bring a solution to the menace, which has become a trend, especially in remote areas like Tobu.
Offering its cooperation and assistance to the education department in improving overall quality of education in the sub-division, provided the department too understands and performs its duty for uplifting the student community, TASU asked the department to depute within 30 days a committed official as SDEO who is ready to work in backward areas
Insisting that no senior headmaster on the verge of retirement in a few months or years should be posted as SDEO, the union declared that will ensure that norms and rules are strictly monitored in each school in return.
Meanwhile, reminding all teachers in-charge that TASU Education Tour will start from June 21, the union asked all VECs and student leaders to be stationed with all records and documents as its office bearers will visit all schools as well as PHCs and sub-centres to interact and collect data of each staff. It warned that should anyone fail to be remain present physically on the day of inspection and meeting, his or her name will be forwarded to the authority concerned for strict action.
