State Police observes ‘Commemoration Day’

Along with the rest of the country, Nagaland Police observed the 53rd Police Commemoration Day at New Police Reserve, Phesama on Wednesday. The event was held at the Tennis Court where state Home minister Yanthungo Patton, along with the state police personnel paid rich tributes to policemen and other uniformed personnel, who laid down their lives while discharging duty.
DGP Nagaland, L.L. Doungel, IPS read out the names of police martyrs of state, police and paramilitary forces from across the country. Nagaland honoured 434 police personnel including two from the state Moakumzuk Ao and T. Hekioba (constables), who died while on duty.
October 21 is observed as the Police Commemoration Day every year since 1959 in memory of the police personnel killed by Chinese troops in Ladakh, he said.
The DGP also narrated the history of commemoration day tracing back to October 21, 1959, when a patrol party of CRPF, led by SI Karam Singh, was ambushed by the Chinese forces at Hot Springs Ladakh and 10 jawans were killed. The Roll of Honor was received from the DPG and they were later placed on the Cenotaph. Later, the parade commander took over, followed by Rashtriya Salute by dignitaries present at the function including police personnel.
The laying of wreath was led by unit representatives followed by Home minister, DGP, ADGs, IGPs, DIGs, Kohima DC, SPs, Commandants, dignitaries, officers and other rank and file.
