Twenty-years-old Veipune Sarah, a baccalaureate student of Darwin School of Business, one of Guwahati’s premier management institution, who received 100% scholarship from Community College Initiative Programme of the United States government, is all set explore her dreams in one of the prestigious Whatcom Community College in Washington starting this August.
Among the eight students selected for the education, two were from Northeast Region, five others were from Kolkata while the other candidate from Arunachal Pradesh was said to have dropped on medical grounds.
Sarah will leave for her studies in business Management August 11 while her classmate Zenith from Manipur has already joined in Miami Dade College Florida.
Interacting with media persons Monday at the KPC conference hall, Sarah refreshed the selection procedures and said she was in disbelief that she too could make it to the final cut and be an eligible student for the 100% scholarship with such a humble family background. Her stay, fooding, lodging, travel and education would be sponsored by the U.S. Government.
All the students would also be earning a stipend of 700 USD every month during their course of 1 year study. Sarah inspired other students of the state to take such international tests and not to be scared or feel inferior to others.
Dean-Academics of Darwin School of business, who accompanied Sarah, Dr. T. K. Bharali said most of the students in this part of the country were unaware of the various scholarships and grants available for higher studies in India and especially abroad.
Barali said “We wish to take the message to the masses that higher education is now not only a privilege of the powerful and the rich.”
He expressed hope that there would be many more ‘Sarahs’ in future from Nagaland and NE. He appealed to support the college thereby the college would be in a better position to facilitate more students to help achieve their dreams.
It is also said that Community Colleges are the gateway to higher education in the U.S. for a growing number of students and are largest and fastest growing sector of higher education in America.
These colleges reportedly offer various types of courses, which are mostly job-oriented and depending on the courses students are awarded associate degrees or certificates. Career Clinic member Jasmine was also present at the interaction.
