
Nagaland also observed the Vigilance Week 2016 under the theme “public participation in promoting integrity and eradicating corruption” at town hall, Dimapur on October 31.
According to DIPR report, vigilance commissioner, Nagaland, K. T. Sukhalu IAS (Rtd) in his keynote address said that corruption was cancerous which every citizen must strive to cure. He observed that many new leaders on campaign declare their determination to eradicate corruption but soon they themselves become corrupted. He said that if people do not act now to remove corruption from the root, Nagaland would remain a developing state. People as citizens of the state are the solution for removing corruption and help to develop Nagaland, he said.
Sukhalu was also disheartened to see corrupt people after taking bribe talking about the high moral standards and urged the people to follow the principles and ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi.
Terming election as the root of corruption, Sukhalu appreciated the NBCC’s call for clean election. He was optimistic that various affiliated association/churches across the state would carry forward the message to their respective members. He however, felt that the church should also introspect on the source of its funds. Giving importance to raising awareness and educating the public about corruption, he said that function of different NGOs should be educating and creating awareness about corruption issues among the general public. Commissioner also stated RTI as the powerful means of preventing corruption and has a good number of success stories but regretted to hear huge sum of money being offered to the applicants and manipulating documents while furnishing the details by the department officials. Commenting on the role of youths towards a corruption free society, Sukhalu said that the nation belongs to its youth and the youths can do a great deal in this matter but must be careful not to take up misguided ideals and ideas. He also felt the need to take up politics, to give new dimension and relevance and law also must ensure protection and rights to its citizens who believe in it. “We must remember that however much the corrupt insist on corruption, it can be rooted out by the public saying “No” he said. Sukhalu also administered the Vigilance Pledge.
Short speeches on the theme was also delivered by president, Naga Council Dimapur, Bangerloba, president, Naga Women Hoho Dimapur, Hukheli T. Wotsa, president, DNSU, Sungkum Aier and DC Dimapur, Kesonyu Yohmi.
The programme was chaired by Director & DIGP, I. Meyionen while the vote of thanks was proposed by TDP& special judge, State Vigilance Commission, Nino Iralu. Other highlights of the programme included reading of messages from Governor and Chief Minister, special song by officers and staff of vigilance commission. Sr. SP, K. Shiwoto Wotsa was the moderator during the interactive session.
MON: In Mon the programme was held at at DC’s conference hall with Tumben P. Tsanglao EAC (P) as the resource person, sponsored by SBI, Mon branch.
According to DIPR, Tumben P. Tsanglao, EAC (P) analyzed corruption at the grass root level presenting a power point on the theme. He also gave an overview of central vigilance commission, Nagaland state vigilance commission, ethics and integrity in work place, public participation, institutional framework of the vigilance commission, why corruption is harmful and a way forward towards single standard morality.
An essay competition was also held on the topic in the theme of vigilance week 2016 where Shatwang Konyak GHSS ‘A’ secured 1st, Teihzei Konyak GHS ‘C’ 2nd and Mankai GHSS ‘D’ secured 3rd respectively. The winners walked away with cash prizes.
The program was led by EAC (P) Rohbi Sangtam, while DC Mon & District Vigilance Officer Mon, W. Honje Konyak spoke on vigilance week and administered the pledge. Relise Sangtam EAC (S) distributed the prize. The program was attended by all the heads of offices, GBs, ward presidents and members.
LONGLENG: District administration, Longleng & SBI Longleng Branch observed the programme at DC’s conference hall with Y.Nuklu Phom, executive secretary Phom Baptist Christian Association (PBCA) as the guest speaker. The speaker encouraged the gathering to maintain & uphold their integrity and work towards eradicating corruption. Further, he emphasized on the need of reforming oneself and thereby affecting positive changes in the society. The programme was chaired by Kevingoto Kulnu, EAC Sakshi. Japheth Woch SDO (C) gave a short speech. The programme was attended by heads of offices, Phom People Council, Phomla Hoichem & various NGOs. A special number was presented by Yingli College while Lienkholal Gangte Branch Manager SBI Longleng proposed the vote of thanks.
WOKHA: In Wokha programme was observed at DC conference hall on the theme.
Speaking from a student point of view on ‘Corruption according to me and how it can be tackled’ Bideno Humtsoe BA 3rd semester, Mt. Tiyi College, Wokha highlighted on the issue of corruption in many organization where funds/schemes meant for the poor and the citizens were misused for personnel gain and opined that Nagaland being a Christian state churches needed to play an important role in eradicating the menace. She also appealed to the concerned citizens and individuals to voice out and joint hands to make corruption free society as students were the builder of future generation.
Thungdemo Kyong, chief, Team Metamorphosis, Wokha, who also spoke on ‘How in my opinion, can public participation promote integrity and eradicate corruption’, said irrespective of creed, colour and status we should be bold enough to fight corruption.
Later SDO (C) Wokha, Asalie Lese led the participants in reading out the Pledge. The function was chaired by EAC (Judl), Wokha Tsutsowe Kupa.
DIPR: Department of Information & Public Relations, Nagaland observed the programme at the DIPR conference hall.
Director IPR, Limawati Ao while addressing the staff said neither Nagaland nor India was corruption-free therefore anti-corruption week was observed every year in India. He mentioned that people usually think of corrupted politicians and officials in developmental departments who are constructing massive buildings in Dimapur and elsewhere. “Corruption is not just taking bribes, not coming to office on time or being absent without leave are also corruption” he said.
People hardly pay taxes here so we do not really care about corruption when it comes to government’s money which was public money, he asserted.
Director also expressed happiness over the record maintained in the IPR Department where no major corruption case was reported. Urging the staff, he said even a small department can make a difference in the state by being a good example.
During the program, all the staff and officials pledged to work unstintingly for eradication of corruption in all spheres.
LUMAMI: Nagaland University (NU) organised a programme on October 31 at Ihoshe Kinimi Hall, NU, Lumami.
In a press note by PRO Peter Ki, vigilance speech was delivered by finance officer Prof. M.K. Sinha. In his speech M.K. Sinha expanded the word VIGILANCE by way of explanation. He stated the first three letters ‘VIG’ are goals: The goal of vigilance should be Value-based and valid; Impersonal; and Genuine. The next three letters ‘ILA’ are actions, the action of vigilance should be Impartial; Legitimated and within the Law; and should lead to fixing of Accountability he added. Further he said the final three letters ‘NCE’ are results: The result of vigilance should negate Nepotism and Nexus; Campaign around the results should be built up so that awareness is spread across; and Enforceable.
The vigilance pledge was led by registrar Prof. T. Lanusosang. The programme was attended by faculty, administrative staff and students. Earlier the programme was chaired by legal cell in-charge N. Albert Khizho. Short speeches were delivered by vice chancellor in-charge prof. N.S. Jamir, HoD department of political science prof. A.K. Singh and, NUSU (L) vice-president Salongpila.
