UNTABA reiterates demands

United Naga Tribes Association of Border Areas (UNTABA) has reiterated its demands including setting up border police, village guards in border villages on Nagaland side as means to protect the state’s boundaries. In a representation submitted to chief minister T.R. Zeliang on October 9, UNTABA chairman Hukavi T. Yepthomi and general secretary Ejanthung Ngullie reiterated all the demands based on an observation during a ‘Peoples’ Dialogue on border issue between Assam and Nagaland on August 9 last in Dimapur. Apprising the chief minister of the historical records and identifying Nagas areas arbitrarily transferred by the British, UNATABA asked the chief minister to restore the same back to Nagaland besides settling the issue without compromising the rights of the original landowners.
UNTABA said border affairs department should be revamped and a border co-ordination centre be established in Dimapur with border police so as to co-ordinate with law enforcing agencies. The association also demanded that the border magistrate should be brought directly under border affairs department and border magistrates should be immediately posted or appointed for Tizit, Tuli, Tsurangkong, Merapani, Ralan, Aghunaqa (Rengmapani), Dhansiripar and Peren for effective monitoring.
UNTABA said the demand for setting up border police and village guards was to act as a deterrent to large number of Assam village protection forces and Assam police forces. The association also asked the chief minister to provide all the essential services and infrastructures to all the recognized villages in the border areas.
