NPF releases list of 57 candidates for February 23 polls

Ruling NPF released names of candidates for 57 assembly constituencies keeping on hold the remaining three which was expected to be announced on January 29.

State chief minister Neiphiu Rio, who leads the party, had expressed confidence that the NPF will return back to power for the third consecutive term after February 23, with an overwhelming majority in alliance with BJP and JDU.

The NPF had come to power in 2003 in alliance with NDM, BJP, Samata Party, JDU and independents. In 2008 NPF again returned to power in alliance with BJP, JDU, NCP and independents. After merger of BJP, NCP and JDU in 2009 , NPF strength in the house rose to 36. NPF headed DAN coalition with six independents.

However, there is no seat adjustment with either of the pre-poll alliance partners. A source in the NPF said the alliance partners will have “friendly fights” in several constituencies.

NPF will field eight new faces who will be making their electoral debut on February 23. They include-former DMC members–Tovihoto Ayemi (1 Dim-I), Lipok Pongen (2 Dim-II), Khriehu Liezietsu, son of Dr Shürhozelie (10 Northern Angami-I), Er. Kropol (15 Southern Angami-II), Sashi Jamir (24 Angetyongpang), Merentoshi R. Jamir, son of chief secretary Alemtemshi Jamir (25 Mongoya) and Dr Benjongliba (30 Alongtaki).

The ticket distribution programme of the NPF will be held on January 31 in the party’s Central Office Kohima at 10 a.m. All candidates along with their election agents are informed to attend positively.
