Special branch women team Dimapur Sunday busted an interstate gang of racketeers based in Assam who were involved in the sale of fake gold.

The team also recovered half a kilogram of gold coated copper from one of the accused identified as Hatim Ali who was arrested Sunday in Dimapur.

According to special branch source, the police were on the hunt to nab the fraudsters involved in this racket since last year after receiving many complaints. Since then, special branch personnel had been waiting for the racketeers to arrive Dimapur.

On Sunday, three of the fraudsters fell into a trap laid by the special branch personnel when they posed as potential customers who wanted to buy the gold.

In the process, the police managed to nab the one who was holding half a kilogram of the fake gold near Blue Hill Station. Two of his accomplices managed to escape.

It was reported that the three accused used to entice potential customers in Nagaland on the phone into buying fake gold by claiming that the items they offered were pure gold.

They had duped few Nagas earlier after calling them to Assam for striking a deal with them.
One of the Naga victims who was duped told Nagaland Post that she was duped by the gang into paying Rs. 9 lakh for 700 gram of fake gold while another one said he paid Rs. 8 lakh for around two kilograms of the fake item.

The victims, who were also present at the special branch office, said the gang followed the same modus operandi. The accused has been handed over to East police station.
