Seminar on kidney, liver transplantation in Kma

Keeping in mind the fast change in daily lifestyles where indications of diabetes and hypertension increases and ultimately affecting the normal functioning of kidney and liver, the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) conducted a seminar on kidney and liver transplantation at Hotal Japfu here Friday.

Resource persons from Down Town Hospital Guwahati addressed the doctor participants from various nursing homes, hospitals and directorate health and family welfare.

Dr. Anjan Barkataky, MD, DM consultant nephrologist and transplant physician spoke on overview of the kidney transplantation. He said diabetes, hypertension and glomerulonephrities patient had more chances of kidney failure.

Asserting there were 110 kidney transplant centres and five liver transplant centres in India, Dr. Barkataky said organ donors in India rates 0.05 per million population per year.

He also mentioned Tamil Nadu, which has the highest organ donors in the country, was the role model for the rest of the county in donating organs, saying rest of the states should emulate the examples. 

Barkataky said there were less reports of death rate by donating organs as the risk of donors were calculated 1 in 3000 donors.

Speaking on liver transplantation, consultant, HPB and Liver Transplant Surgery, Down Town Hospital Dr. D.J Bora disclosed organ donation problem prevailed only in India and said there were complications taking dialysis treatment. He said follow up was very vital which has to be continued for a year.

Liver transplantation is a viable treatment option for end-stage liver disease and acute liver failure, he said, adding that surgical procedure was very demanding and ranges from 4 to 18 hours depending on the outcome of the surgery.

Interacting with media persons after the seminar, the consultants maintained Down Town Hospital Guwahati was recognized by the government of Nagaland and said the expenses incurred at the surgery could be reimbursed, however they said the case had to be referred from NHAK.

They also mentioned that for kidney transplantation Rs. 6 lakh was being charged from the day of admission till discharge that includes patient/recipient’s stay for 15 days and donor for six to seven days. For liver transplantation regulatory works is in process and are expected to begin likely by January-February 2014.
