Ngapnei and and Tinglak Konyak from Longkei Village became parents to triplets, all girls, by a planned caesarean section at Mon district hospital on September 25.
The married couple who stay in Tizit already have one son; three-year-old Yanath. The caesarean section was performed by Dr. Aman, gynecologist, with assistance from Elin Erlan, Médecins Sans Frontières /Doctors Without Borders (MSF), midwife and by sister Atula, sister Levi, sister Kimneiting and Phyon to ensure the best care for the mother and the triplets in the OT that has been rehabilitated by MSF.
The prevalence of spontaneous triplet pregnancy is about one in 7000 deliveries. Since triplet pregnancies are associated with complications like pre-term delivery and pre-eclampsia, Ngapnei had to stay close to the hospital for frequent check-ups the last weeks of her pregnancy.
She is now recovering well after surgery and her daughters are all healthy and happy. Lomei, the firstborn, was 2,2 kg at birth, Wanom were 2,1 kg and the lastborn; Molemwas 1,9 kg.
These are the first set of triplets to be born at Mon district hospital as the staff recalls. The hospital team, who made sure the triplets were safely delivered, congratulated the parents and reminded every pregnant women that they were welcome to deliver at Mon district hospital where the following services are available: Antenatal and postnatal care, immunization, family planning and a maternity with pediatric ward.
Even in normal pregnancies, complications can arise at the time of birth, and timely help seeking can save the life and health of both mothers and newborns.
