Gallery of Contemporary Art (GoCA) was inaugurated on September 24 at RCEMPA, Jotsoma Kohima.
Task Force for Music and Arts (TaFMA) had taken up an initiative to give platform and opportunity to artists in Nagaland by opening the first gallery of contemporary art at RCEMPA hall, Kohima where artists can display and sell their art on the spot.
Special guest, advisor, Art and Culture and Tourism, H Khehovi Yeptomi in his speech mentioned that he was very grateful and sincerely appreciated Theja Meru for his initiative in successfully opening this gallery which coincides with the hundred days completion of TaFMA,
He said that Nagas talk about unemployment and many other problems but hardly talk about the talents that God has given. Naga society always place too much importance in getting a white collared job. He reminded that Nagas are greatly talented and have so much scope in various fields like music, art, sports, etc. But many were afraid to venture into unknown territories because of fear of failure. Yeptomi encouraged all to be brave, face fear and to break out of the chains of societal expectations and explore the world around. While saying that God helps those who help themselves, he was happy that local artists were getting the platform and exposure they deserve through the establishment of the gallery.
Speaking to this correspondent, he also mentioned that regular workshop and outreach should be given to educate the public about the value of art and culture. He also advised the team to venture out to other districts and give opportunity to all.
TaFMA advisor Theja Meru in the opening remark thanked the chief minister of Nagaland for giving the effort and interest to art and music in Nagaland. He said the gallery will be open from Monday to Friday, 11 a.m to 3 p.m. The goal is to expand to national and international gallery.
Meru had also informed that the first Dimapur art festival will be held from October 15 to 19 where all the artists are invited to be a part of. For artists who wish to display their artwork can reach out to the Art NGOs, as they will be tying with different art societies. This gallery will also be a space for tourists and public to pick art anytime.
Cynthia Kolakhe, an artist who specialises in contemporary art is also displaying her artwork and said that this was a very good venture for new upcoming artist and expressed gratitude to the TaFMa team for giving such opportunities to the Naga youth. She added that that she looks forward to a fine arts university in Nagaland in future. (Correspondent)
