Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cavalcade was stuck on a flyover in Punjab on January 5 for nearly 20 minutes due to farmers blocking the flyover. Private cars were also seen approaching the cavalcade, which was a major security lapse. It alleged that the Punjab government failed to deploy additional security to secure any movement by road. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to address a rally in Ferozepur today, but the event had to be cancelled. The Punjab Congress ruled government under chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi claimed that Modi made a last-minute change of the route without informing the state police. Further, the Congress maintained that because the public meeting scheduled at the Ferozpur remained vacant, the BJP instead latched on to speculations that Modi was prevented from taking the route to the venue. The route taken,without prior information from the PM’s security, was under occupation by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha. The SKM said the protesting farmer bodies had no programme to obstruct Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s event at Ferozepur in Punjab. If that be the case then who was/were responsible for creating the crisis? Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to visit Ferozepur in poll-bound Punjab on Wednesday.However, his convoy was stranded on a flyover due to a blockade by protesters. The prime minister’s Punjab visit was purely political. However as the prime minister of the country, Modi was well within his right to plan and execute his plans. However, since Modi, as the prime minister and also as a visitor to Punjab,should not have politicised the flop show. The issue is supposedly a law and order situation and not politics. The Picture that emerges is that Modi changed the route at the last minute. Even so, it is the responsibility of the state government to ensure that its police chief and forces were covering the security of the prime minister. On the other hand, if Modi decided not to go to the election rally because he may have been informed that there were no crowds(as also shown by television channels) ,then the entire issue of protestors blocking the entourage was not the truth. The protesters were demanding that cases under various sections of IPC against protesting farmers be dropped and also that the union minister Ajay Mishra be dropped since his son-Ashish Mishra- was charged under sections of IPC for the hit-and-run case. The BJP instead chose to counter these allegations made by the Congress by reiterating that it was all a conspiracy. Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh, who has joined hands with the BJP, too hit out at the Congress government and batted for the imposition of President’s rule, while Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal alleged there is a complete collapse of law and order in Punjab. The battle for Punjag has already began and the vitriolic attack against the Congress-led government is expected. However, in order to get to the truth, the entire case should be probed by a high level judicial enquiry since it involves the office of the prime minister of India.
