ENCSU warns of reviving stir

January 7, 2018 | by admin

Eastern Nagaland College Students’ Union (ENCSU) has warned the government of reviving their agitation if the government continued to delay disbursement of the post matriculation scholarship for 2016-17.
A press release from ENCSU president, M. Longre Chang and general secretary, Wangnei C. Jessuhu said that if the government continued to be adamant in refusing their demand, union was on hand to lock the gates to the Higher Education directorate. The union also warned that they would not be responsible for any situation that may arise during the course of their agitation.
They challenged the department and the state government to come up with a concrete reason for the delay in disbursement even after the chief secretary’s assurance, on December 7, 2017, in the presence of officials and students’ organizations, that the scholarships would be disbursed on or before December 25, 2017. ENCSU said that they had taken the December 7 discussion as gentlemen’s discussion, and respecting the conclusion, they had suspended their protest as agreed. On the other hand, they said, the government failed to uphold their own written assurance even after the new years and added that it was “very funny” that the 2016-17 scholarship amounts were to be received in 2018. ENCSU said that it was a big shame that reflected the system of the current government.
They also asked why the department had not received the final instalment from the Centre for the scholarships when the New Year had already arrived. ENCSU also asserted that this was not a new demand, but the students were only asking for what the Centre had credited to them and said that it was sad that even the small amount meant for students was misused and mismanaged.
They also asked the SIT team to submit their report to the government and to publish it in print media, and should anyone try to shelter the offenders, they would be left with no option but to publish the details of the misuse of “scholarship and the person involved.”
ENCSU also asked organizations to not stand in support of the government but work for the welfare of the students. They added that as the cabinet had admitted to misuse, there is no logic for any NGO to give a clean chit to the government.
They asked the department to release the full amount immediately while also asking all students to be prepared to fight for justice and their rights.
“We as a students’ custodian will continue to fight to safeguard and protect the interests of our students”, the press release added.
