Training of breeders under FOCUS-IFAD

A two-day training programme of breeder family under Fostering Climate Resilient Upland Farming System in North East- International Fund for Agricultural Development (FOCUS-IFAD) was held in the conference hall of Hotel Hornbill Wokha on March 15 and 16.
A press release from CVO office Wokha informed that during the training, deputy director Dr. E. Mhonlumi Lotha in her welcome address highlighted the activities of the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS) department under FOCUS-IFAD project.
She briefed the gathering that out of 100 villages under FOCUS-IFAD project in Wokha district, 15 villages were adopted as breeder villages.
From each of the15 villages, one family was chosen as the breeder family and informed that in order to qualify as a breeder family, one had to fulfil many criteria.
Dr. Mhonlumi said the breeder families were given assistance by the Focus-IFAD through the AH&VS department to rear pigs, propagate and produce piglets. She informed that these piglets would be sold to neighbouring cluster villages for rearing purposes and all managemental aspects and technical know-how would be provided by the department.
Delivering a speech as guest of honour, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Wokha, Lankonsen Tsanglao encouraged the breeder family from Wokha district to dedicate themselves in rearing more pigs to attain self-sufficiency in the meat sector.
Quoting from the Bible verse, “The Parable of Talents”, ADC also urged upon the farmers to utilise their God-gifted talents in animal husbandry activities to maximise their farming and to also share their expertise to other farmers.
Meanwhile, CVO Wokha, Dr. N. ThungbenYanthan delivered the keynote address while deputy DAO Wokha, Viwheto Thorie and Project Implementing Team in-charge Wokha, Er. PfutsuloThasau delivered short speeches.
Later, vote of thanks was proposed by veterinary assistant surgeon, Wokha, Dr. Yanben Kikon.
At the technical session, resource persons Dr. E. Mhonlumi Lotha and Dr. Yanben Kikon spoke on “Silage Making” and “Pig Farming for income generation” respectively through PowerPoint while vote of thanks was proposed by progressive farmer Mongathung Ezung.
Altogether, 15 breeder families attended the training programme.
