Centre failed to take up issues against ethnic minorities, says NEFIS

North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) has condemned the failure of the BJP government at the Centre to raise the issue of violence committed against the ethnic minorities, especially against Chakma and Santhal communities in Bangladesh during the recent visit of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India.
In a statement, NEFIS convener Chinglen Khumukcham said that there has been a huge surge in atrocities against minorities and tribal communities in recent times. However, the Government of India instead of taking up this issue was actively pursuing the agenda of “Indian businessmen inked business deals with Bangladesh PM”.
NEFIS stand was that the issue of grave atrocities should have been pro-actively taken up by the BJP Government, but was neglected in order to create a convenient atmosphere for inking of deals “which would be of no profit to the common people of both countries”.
Further, NEFIS claimed that the Government instead of building a bond of solidarity with the exploited and victimized people in the neighbour countries has become a tool “for furthering the exploitative interests of Indian business class”.
