How much is worth learning?

November 10, 2024 | by admin

Educational philosophy of teaching and learning is influenced by the ideas of educational thinkers. Of quite many of them, let us pick Jean Jacques Roseau’s concept for now. He propounds learning in natural way. For small children joyful learning is the best way. He is against mechanical learning method. Akin to this system is Play Way method and kindergarten, which means garden of the kids. Naturalist concept propounds learning by doing by children themselves. In his model teacher has no role. His pragmatic theory is derived from “Nature is the best teacher” This means nature has everything to learn from. So, Roseau is a Naturalist. School books have no role in his scheme of education.
If that is too extreme, as many of the present parents would think, there is the Idealist view of teaching-learning theory. What is ideal and commonly acceptable for the child’s physical and mental development is also matched with societal goals of healthy and ideal living – a balanced pursuit for knowledge society and human values. Complete adherence to Naturalist idea is confronted with systematic advocates favoring graded guidance with text books and the involvement of teacher. A school without teachers and books would be a myth and magical. This would seem the anti-thesis of Naturalism.
Coming to the core issue of the present education system, the driving force is the so called competition. Inside the bulky satchel every child carries not less than ten kilos of text books. What knowledge and how much are the children expected to learn on daily basis? This fearful-looking bulging bag was advised against by Prof. Yash Pal Committee. He was once Chairman, UGC. He was also the Chancellor of Nagaland University at its nascent stage.
Prof. Kumar of Delhi University, in his book “What is worth Teaching” raised the issue of substance of core values in the midst’s of present confusions being faced in our choice and preference of learning. It is time we ask ourselves “how much should a child learn in a day.” Knowledge has no limit, if schools’ quality benchmark is measured by number of extra-curricular activities plus extra text books there are inherent competitions, and not necessarily healthy. Instead of providing joyful learning condition it is burdensome for children and parents. Prof. Yash Pal recommended deposition of school books at school rakes at the end of the day, take out the next day for children for use. Home work is another extra burden.
Stressful learning is found to lead to dropping out specially, for slow learners. How many subjects should be taught is one important concern, and at what pace should a child learn are pedagogical and psychological questions. Without due study of child’s psycho-motor issues, there is apparent tendency of excess learning materials pushing down the throat of children. Giving them relaxed moments at home and in the class may be devised and see the outcome. Parental partnership with children at home in learning situation should be valued by everyone. Informed parent-teacher co-ordination works wonder.
