Minister of Tourism and Higher Education, Temjen Imna Along reminded the graduating students that holding certificate was not enough but they should strive for continuous learning for better outcome in life.
He was speaking at the 38th convocation of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Regional Centre Kohima held at Capital Convention Centre on Wednesday.
Imna Along said that Nagas, despite being among the most literate, were also among the least willing to learn and adapt.
He pointed out that many youths were unwilling to work and were engaged in “endless unions and associations”, and therefore encouraged the youths to refrain from joining unions and associations without understanding their causes.
To address this issues, Imna Along underscored the importance of finding meaningful employment that benefits both individuals and the state, asserting that Nagaland has the potential to become a national asset if the people embrace positivity and discard negativity.
He further said that failure should not be seen as a reason to give up but as an opportunity to learn, adapt, and cultivate good qualities like resilience and diligence.
The minister also congratulated the students, emphasizing that their achievements at a prestigious university were well-deserved and hoped that 914 graduates from the Kohima center would continue to learn, practice, and work diligently until they reached their full potential.
He extended gratitude to the Government of India for collaborating with institutions like IGNOU, which play a pivotal role in shaping individuals and upholding the commitment of a democratic nation to its people.
Imna Along also said that IGNOU makes dreams attainable by allowing students to work while being part of the academic journey. Regional director Dr.Premila Swamy D in her welcome address and Director’s Report informed that the main Convocation function was held in IGNOU HQs at New Delhi with Dharmendra Pradha minister of Education, government of India as the chief guest.
She informed that at this 38th Convocation of the University, 3,13,770 degrees, diplomas, and certificates will be conferred on successful students spread across the country and abroad.
The Convocation was also simultaneously held at 39 Regional Centres including Kohima Regional Centre. She informed that under the Kohima Regional Centre, there were 910 eligible students, which comprises 708 Master’s degrees, 154 Bachelor’s Degrees, 31 Diplomas, and 17 Certificate programs. Out of these 910 eligible candidates, around 220 (UG & PG) candidates received certificates.
She informed that the Regional Centre at Kohima was established on December 14, 2000 with a mission to spread education in the state of Nagaland especially to give opportunity to the underprivileged and working professionals.
Prior to the establishment of Kohima Regional Centre, the region was under Shillong Regional Centre with two regular study centres and two special study centres.
Since its inception, she informed that the Regional Centre at Kohima has been making every possible efforts to impart quality education through the ODL system. At present there are 16 Study Centres and one program specific Study Centre spread across the state.
She added that except for the newly established districts, the centre has study centres at 12 districts namely Kohima, Dimapur, Mokokchung, Zunheboto, Wokha, Tuensang, Longleng, Mon, Kiphire, Phek, Peren and Chumoukedima.
