On the eve of expiry of ceasefire between the Government of India and the GPRN/NSCN on April 30, the latter has expressed regrets at the “insincerity” of the Centre while at the same time cautioning its armed and civilian cadres to be prepared for any eventuality arising out of the present situation.
According to sources in the GPRN/NSCN defence wing, the outfit convened a high level security meeting on Wednesday where officials from its Ministry of Home Affairs and top brass of its Naga Army deliberated on the possible “delay” in further extension of ceasefire and the subsequent consequences.
It was also learnt that the outfit had convened a meeting with the Joint Council of kilonsers Thursday where the issue of further extension of ceasefire was deliberated at length. Sources said that the outfit has sounded a “red alert” to all its regions, both army and civil set up adding, that the outfit was “prepared to face any eventuality” arising out of the government of India’s failure to correspond with the outfit on the issue.
Meanwhile, GPRN/NSCN finance kilonser C.Singsong informed this correspondent that the delay was attributed to unavailability of the government of India’s special secretary who was on foreign assignments. The kilonser however expressed optimism that the ceasefire would be extended. He said there was no reason as to why the Centre would neglect the issue concerning the Nagas.
The senior GPRN/NSCN leader said that a meeting would be convened on May 3 where its representatives would meet the GOI counterparts to discuss on the “possible” extension of the ceasefire.
He however cautioned the cadre of the GPRN/NSCN that included both armed and civil wings to remain confined in their respective places of deployment and to avoid any confrontations during the interim period.
On other issues, he also admitted that there were certain charges against the outfit by the Centre on issues of extortion and kidnapping. Singsong however termed them as “trivial” . He said the GPRN/NSCN had informed the government of India that certain individuals were committing such acts in the name of GPRN/NSCN. It may be recalled that the GOI entered on a ceasefire with the erstwhile NSCN (K) on 30th April 2001. Meanwhile sources said the cease fire would be extended within a few days.
