Dr. SC Jamir called upon the Nagas to understand that the granting of statehood was not based on population, area or resources but purely based on the political aspirations of the Nagas to shape their destiny according to their intelligence.
Addressing the people of Mon as the chief guest during the 125 years celebration of the Indian National Congress on Thursday, Dr. Jamir said it was time to review the past and assess where Nagas are standing today and said that no one could deny the fact that the face of Nagaland had changed since the inception of statehood.
Stating that the spectacle of present Nagaland was in doldrums Jamir said Nagas were again witnessing the emergence of diabolical phenomena, desperately trying to control the Naga society. He said except for greed of money and power, such elements have exploited the society.
Manifestations of insurgency syndrome visible in all departments of human activities are pointers towards a bleak future for the Nagas, he asserted.
As a living witness to the formation of statehood, Jamir said since then expenditure on all fronts were being given by the Centre. Even after completion of 47 years of statehood “we have failed to stand on our own legs and continue to beg from the centre for everything”, he added.
“You will know the truth and the truth will set you free” he said asserting that for decades, all parties— over ground and underground has taken Nagas for a ride. Appreciating the patience displayed by the parties involved in negotiations with the Centre till date, he however said that the government of India had made known to all that the issue of sovereignty and integration were not negotiable adding as far as the original agenda was concerned, it was a dead-end.
Nagas have not been given the opportunity to express their opinions on their political future, Jamir lamented and added saying leaders of public confidence, political parties and groups should meet and put their heads together to chalk out a political framework to be placed before the government of India.
Nagaland has become merely a stage with different groups showing their respective dramas as if Nagas are indentured labourers just to witness their plays, Jamir stated.
Reminding that Naga society has been assailed from all corners by different elements, he said people were fed up and angry with the present scenario and yearns for a better tomorrow.
Further, he asked the youth to ponder whether they (youth) would like to be a part of the 21st century civilization or to remain like museum piece. He also questioned the older generation as to what kind of legacy are they preparing for the future generation.
Dr. Jamir called upon the people to accept the challenge and charter a new pragmatic road map to bring peace and tranquility to the land.
Meanwhile, NPCC president, S.I Jamir accused the DAN government of neglecting the Mon – Namtola road deliberately and said even if there were problems, it was the duty of the government to see that the road construction was completed.
SI Jamir who also spoke on the occasion appreciated the party workers of Mon district for their support and said that it was due to the unity shown by the DCC Mon that influenced the rest of the district to unite and elect the NPCC President.
CLP leader, Tokheho Yepthomi also accused the DAN government of misusing cores of rupees, which were earmarked under Development for Under Develop Areas (DUDA). He said “if the activities of the higher ups were clean and transparent, everything would function smoothly; the offices and all developmental activities”.
He also alleged that the DAN government was allowing the Political Affair Committee (PAC) members to use government registered vehicles, which he said that the Congress party never did during their regime.
On the road condition of Mon district, he said ‘if the only connectivity of Mon is in such a deplorable condition, what will be the condition of the rest of the roads of the district’.
Appreciating the DCC Mon for organizing the convention commemorating the125 years of Indian National Congress, he appealed the party workers to sacrifice and work for the success of the party and expressed hope that the party will come to power in the coming election, under the steady and well experience leader like S.I Jamir.
