Minister for Agriculture, Dr. Chumben Murry on Thursday maintained that the state had low economy with poor resources, and that major illnesses such as AIDS would further decline the economy of the people and the state. He said fight to prevent HIV and AIDS had not made much impact on the large unorganized business sector of the state. He expressed concern over the issue, stating that HIV was a major concern that involved work force of the population.
Stating this at a two-day training workshop on prevention of HIV and AIDS in the World of Work at Millennium Hotel, Dr. Chumben Murry expressed the need to cover the general lot on the knowledge of HIV and AIDS. The epidemic has percolated the general population and even the unborn, he said.
Dr. Chumben further lauded NSACS and all stakeholders for their collaborated effort in contributing towards reducing the rate of HIV and AIDS in the state.
Director of V.V. Giri, National Labour Institute, Noida, V. P. Yajurvedi said that the HIV and AIDS workshop in the world of work was an important topic as the epidemic has challenged development and social impact of the society. He said India had large working population affected by low literacy, hard working condition, poor health care, migration etc that enhances vulnerability of HIV and AIDS. Realizing the need of the situation, Yajurvedi said that the NACO and Ministry of Labour had collaborated to reach out to the working population and bring out ways to protect them and mitigate the risk of HIV and AIDS.
Topics for the two day workshop include overview of HIV and AIDS scenario in India, prevention of HIV and AIDS in the world of work, problems of HIV and AIDS in Nagaland, population based survey on HIV and AIDS prevalence in Nagaland and North East, stigma and discrimination, non-discrimination strategy and prptection of PLHIV etc. The resource persons include Prof Ritu Priya from JNU; Dr. Ramu Ghosh from V.V. Giri National Labour Institute, Noida; Dr. Tinurenla from NSACS; Dr. Ruchi Sogarwal, programme officer, NACO; Dr. P. Ngully, chairman, KRIPA Foundation; K.V. Nurumi, president of Kohima Press Club; Lydia from Lawyers’ Collective.
The workshop is organized by V.V. Giri National Labour Institute Noida in collaboration with Labour Department and NSACS.
