Dhansiri River Flood Control Board (DRFCB) Monday said that “unchecked activities of extraction of sand from Dhansiri river bed and stone/sand gravel from the Chathe river” has become one of the major cause of soil erosion along the river banks.
DRFCB urged the district administration to intervene and come up with systematic policy for exploitation of materials from the river bed. DRFCB chairman, Hokheto Kiba in a statement however said the board on two occasions requested the administration to convene a meeting but failed to materialize.
It reminded that a joint meeting of Mahalders– sand, boulders and sand gravels and various government agencies and NGOs was pertinent to discuss on various issues like extracting materials from the river bed, pollution so that a strong policy to keep check on such activities can be brought about.
