
State commissioner of excise and prohibition, Maongwati Aier Thursday has made an appeal to the state government to recruit 200 more personnel so as to let the excise department perform efficiently in executing their duties along with the existing 264 personnel in the state.
Maongwati said this while addressing officers and staff of excise and prohibition during the destruction of seized liquor programme held at its directorate in Dimapur. He commended the personnel of the department for executing their duties efficiently despite lack of man power.
Maongwati also disclosed ECI after observing the recently held Nagaland Assembly election, has been invited him to give a power point presentation on the success of conducting duties for the coming Karnataka elections on May 5.
Stating that alcohol was a “giant killer” ending the lives of thousands of people, Maongwati pointed out that the fault lies not with the consumers but the suppliers. He lauded Assam government for declaring February 22 and 23 as dry days with the objective of curbing inflow of liquor into Nagaland during assembly election.
Maongwati disclosed 364 persons involved in 340 election related cases were held for “possession or selling” of alcohols worth Rs.50 lakhs within a month.
Also speaking on behalf of Naga Council Dimapur (NCD), joint secretary (admn), Joseph Shingnaisui said the excise department should be appreciated for their work. He further urged all to cooperate with the department to eradicate the social menace from society. It may be mentioned that the 15441 bottles of assorted IMFLs which were destroyed Thursday were seized between July 2012 and February 2013 and valued at Rs.18.93 lakhs in the market. Rs.2, 80,500 was collected as fines by the department during the period.
