In an apparent sign of differences in opinion within the Nagaland state BJP unit, section of the party members have expressed dissention following the recent turn of events.
First, it was the sacking of BJP MLA as parliamentary secretary and the vociferous attack on NPF-led DAN government, its long time ally since 2003, for corruption and mis-governance and later a statement issued by the party supporting the DAN government.
Some in the party, after its MLA was sacked by chief minister as parliamentary secretary, demanded that the BJP pull out of the DAN government, citing reasons that the chief minister arbitarily sacked the MLA without consulting its ally, BJP. However, some felt it was the prerogative of the chief minister and chose to remain silent on the matter.
On Saturday the BJP held its consultative meeting at Kohima, where both party officials and legislators discussed on “issues faced by the party and to review party’s development”, BJP unit general secretary (media) Jaangsillung Gonmei stated in a press note.
Gonmei said party also discussed “important matters pertaining to organisation and political”. The members present made it known that “any political decisions would be taken in consultation with the party legislators”.
The meeting further resolved to urge upon party men and legislators to work with better coordination in order “to strengthen the party and thus the DAN government”.
BJP unit has informed that the next state executive meeting would be in the second week of January, after the national executive meeting slated to be held from January 7-8, 2017.
It may be pointed out that the State BJP unit had recently submitted a memorandum to the Governor, expressing serious concern over rampant corruption by NPF-led DAN government.
The BJP in the memorandum stated that the party could no longer remain silent when people were in utter misery due to the “mis-governance and misdeeds of the state government”. However, reacting to the statement deciding to strengthen the government, a senior party member on condition of anonymity said “it is a total u-turn against the memorandum which was submitted to the Governor and also to the Centre.”
“How can the party speak in two different tunes when we have been so vociferous against rampant corruption by the DAN government,” the party member said, adding, the Governor himself spoke the truth against his own government.
“Are we not answerable to the people? Or are we answerable only to a few and change our stand on how it would suit them,” the party man said.
The party has clearly stated that BJP was committed to stand and work for a corrupt free government in line with the clarion call made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said. Now, if some wants to curry-favour in order to protect their own interest, it is best left to the people to judge. Such callous attitude would definitely cost the party, he added.
