Following the lifting of Mariani road blockade imposed by Adivasi activists along Nagaland-Assam border, Ao Senden, has urged upon the state government to take up pending issues related to the plight of the state’s citizens in Mokokchung district.
In a memorandum signed by Ao Senden president Dr. Sangyu Yaden and general secretary Tsupong Longchar addressed to state chief minister, the Senden reiterated its demand for the construction of a foothill state highway connecting Mokokchung with Dimapur.
Reminding that it had on several occasions, submitted representations for early construction of the highway, the Ao Senden lamented that the government was yet to take any positive measures as a result of which, Naga travelers continued to suffer constant harassment from “bad elements” in Assam.
Ao Senden reminded that the state government had, in 2006 promised to provide village guards for Naga villagers along the borders for protection and peaceful environment but till date, no tangible measures were taken so far.
The memorandum appealed to the chief minister to immediately establish Nagaland Armed Police post at Saring village which was facing constant threat from people in Assam.
It also demanded the EAC post specifically created for Longchem be made functional with immediate posting of an officer while also highlighting the “ineffectiveness and habitual absence” of border magistrate at Tzürangkong.
Ao Senden said the original settlers in border areas were committed to peaceful co-existence. However, it alleged that a “third force” created by state agencies and “recent immigrants” in Assam, were creating “mistrust” and “provocations” to destroy good relations.
With regard to the May 24 incident, the memorandum urged the state government to provide compensation to the victims who were assaulted.
It also asked the government to take up the issue at an appropriate platform, since the incident was a case of serious disruption along communal lines led by an “elected MLA from Assam.”
MTLT supports Senden
Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT) while condemning the May 24 incident in Mariani, has called on all to denounce the “barbaric acts” meted out to innocent Nagas including two Naga women by an unruly mob.
MTLT in a statement signed by president Imkongsanen and general secretary Akangnungsang has also demanded both Assam and Nagaland governments to set up a joint inquiry team consisting of senior officials to probe into the involvement of a local MLA Rupjoyti Kurmi in the May 24 incident and also the case of land encroachment by people from Assam side in Saringyim.
While extending support to Ao Senden call for NH-61 bandh, MTLT appealed residents in Mokokchung and neighbouring districts “not to panic but remain steadfast” in Ao Senden’s quest for justice.
AKM memo to Governor
Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) in a memorandum submitted to state governor has highlighted the May 24 incident in Mariani.
The memorandum signed by AKM president N. Akok Lkr and assistant general secretary Sashikaba Aier sought help of the governor so that immediate action could be taken against MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi and others.
It demanded appropriate compensation be given to the victims including compensation for the damaged vehicle.
AKM asked the governor to help in setting up of a police check post in the border area and in the immediate construction of the proposed foothills road from Dimapur to Mon district.
