Directorate of Geology and Mining, Nagaland has embarked on geological hazards studies of district headquarters and townships of the state with special emphasis on landslides and its adverse affect.
Considering the fact that recurrence of landslides posed a serious threats to human habitation, experts from the directorate were on field visit to conduct the studies.
Three Geologist led by Mar Walling, now camping at Mokokchung town, visited different colonies and wards and other places, particularly landslides-prone areas in and around Mokokchung Town. With the help of Geo-Technology the experts conducted study on rock formation, type of rocks, soil condition and its positioning. The experts also met officials and the public and heard their observation/knowledge on the subject. The team leader also met the Deputy Commissioner, C.M. Tsanglao in his office chamber and apprised him of their field visit. The other two experts include K. Zavi Chakhesang and Hilto Sumi, both Assistant Geologists.
According to an official bulletin, the DC said such geo-hazards studies being conducted by the department would go long way in mitigating the problems and help create awareness among the people about landslides threat to human habitation and agriculture.
The three Geologists had earlier visited Zunheboto and Phek Town. On completion of the studies, experts were expected to make a report on their finding and suggestion/recommends for prevention/protection of landslides recurrence or at least minimize intensity of the problem.
