KMC rounds up 8 footpath vendors

In a drive to keep footpaths clear, Kohima Municipal Council with the help of the police conducted surprise raids and apprehended at least eight footpath vendors who were habitual defaulters and seized their goods.
A joint team of KMC inspectors and police apprehended the defaulters from below Central Bank and Mission Compound junction on Monday morning and were detained at the North Police Station.
KMC Deputy Chairperson Khriehu Liezietsu informed that the KMC decided to act tough and impose Rs 5000 fine on the defaulters as they refused to pay heed to repeated warnings. “I have asked the police not to release them unless they pay the fine,” he said.
KMC had on earlier occasions carried out eviction drives and imposed a fine of Rs.500 which proved to be ineffective as vendors returned to the footpaths as soon as the inspectors left the place. “For them, Rs 500 seems to be nothing, so I’ve decided to enhance the amount of fine to Rs 5000 this time,” he added.
Similarly, KMC Councilor Neilaselie Kire incharge of Market said that the council had received several complaints from the public on the footpath vendors particularly at Mission Compound junction and below Central Bank. “Particularly during school hours, the footpaths in these areas become very dangerous for school children with risks of accidents.”
