Nagaland Women Commission (NWC) and Rengma Mothers Association (RMA) jointly organized a sub-division level women seminar on the theme ‘Towards a new horizon’ on May 20 at Tseminyu town hall. Nagaland Women Commission Chairperson, Sano Vamuzo in her key note address said that on realization of the long felt need of Naga women, Nagaland State Commission for Women was launched officially on March 28, 2007 to safeguard rights and legal entitlement of women.
She said having the commission was not about men versus women to compete but to complement each other in all endeavour and “as constitution wise men and women were equal and each have equal rights before the law”.
“It is the legitimate right of every individual to avail rights to shelter, food, education, health and water and every woman had the right to voice demands for all that was needed in order to bring advancement, development and empowerment for a better meaningful life”, she added.
Chairperson of the seminar, Secretary NWC, Lithrongla G. Chishi, (NCS) speaking on women and empowerment enlightened the participants saying that empowerment meant bringing empowerment legally or formally with power or freedom to do certain things.
She stressed that in the present context of the Naga women, empowerment was vitally essential to bring about a positive change in the society, economically, politically, financially and socially through equality. “Grounds of gender should not be the defining factor to confine her within the flame work of the kitchen instead she should be treated with just and her voice should be taken as equally in the process of various decision making”, she asserted.
She further stressed that ignorance of women was a major hindrance to empowerment, that education was the key to live in a protean horizon, therefore no woman should be devoid of education.
Legal Consultant NWC, Lydia Yepthomi spoke on Legal Rights and Women that covered penal laws for protection of women and children that include rape, maternity benefits, marriage, divorce, maintenance/custody of children, succession etc. Under domestic violence which include physical violence, sexual violence, emotional/verbal violence, economic violence etc.
Dr. Teninlo Jemu spoke on Women and Health and Yanlen CDPO (Tribal Kohima), Member NWC spoke on Importance of nutrition for women and child.
ADC Tseminyu, Wezope exhorted and vote of thanks was proposed by member NWC, Abeni TCK. Pastor RBC Tseminyu, Haiwalo offered the invocation and RMA President Kelisha Kath thanked all resource persons and participants for attending the programme. Village chairmen, VDB secretaries, women VDB members, ASHA worker, anganwadi workers, church workers and other NGO members attended the programme.
Altogether more than 300 participants from different villages under Tseminyu attended the programme.
Meanwhile, Rengma Mothers’ Association has extended gratitude to Sano Vamuzo, Chairperson, Naga Women Commission and her team for organizing a one day seminar on the topic “Towards a new horizon.”
A press release issued by President, Rengma Mothers’ Association, Kelusha Kath, stated the seminar was an eye opener for Rengma mothers, where they were sensitized of their rights and empowerment. The association also thanked resource persons Dr. Tinenlo Jemu, S.M.O. Tseminyu, Lithrongla G. Chishi (NCS) Secretary, Nagaland Women Commission and Lydia Yepthomi, Legal Consultant, NWC, for their contribution on “Women & Health” and “Importance of Nutrition” for Women & Child.
Rengma Mothers Association also thanked Wezope, Additional Deputy Commissioner Tseminyu for his cooperation and support in making the programme a success.
