Directorate of Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) has brought to the notice of the public that some cases of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) was found to be prevalent in Dimapur.
In a press statement issued here on Friday, the department, however, informed that it has taken all necessary preventive measures to contain the spread of disease. The disease is reportedly transmitted through the bite of “culex” mosquitoes.
Common symptoms of Japanese Encephalitis, according to the Health and Family Welfare department include headache, disorientation, coma; Tremors, paralysis (generalized) loss of coordination; association with neurological complications leading to death. The disease reportedly affects all age groups and both sexes, however, the children are more prone to the disease, with death occur more in children.
Japanese Encephalitis transmitting mosquitoes, the health department said breeds in natural water bodies like rice fields, ponds, irrigation channels, seepages and the like.
It was informed that pigs play an important role in spreading Japanese Encephalitis, as Japanese Encephalitis virus multiplies in pigs without suffering from the disease and maintains the disease for a long period.
Mosquitoes after biting pigs, picks up the germ and pass it on to human beings. Japanese Encephalitis is not transmitted through human to human contact like malaria or other vector disease, the department informed.
As a precautionary measure, the department has advised the public to use insecticide treated bed nets, introduce larvivorous fish in water bodies and keep the surroundings clean.
It has also informed to avoid sleeping near pigsties and if any children suffers from high fever with Japanese Encephalitis symptoms to visit nearby hospitals.
