Meeting resolves to restore peace,normalcy in Dimapur

Following hours of deliberation between DC and SP Dimapur with Parliamentary Secretary Industries and Commerce Dr. Nihoshe and Adviser Sericulture and Cooperation Azheto Zhimomi, held in the SP’s office Sunday afternoon, it was resolved that supporters of both groups involved in the current fracas in Dimapur would restraint from taking the law into their own hands and maintain peace.
Sunday’s meeting came close on the heels of tension in Dimapur after Friday’s assault on a shopkeeper and attempt on DMC chairman Khekaho Assumi on Saturday evening that led to promulgation of section 144 Cr PC to prevent any untoward incident.
It may be recalled that a mob attacked the house of Shankar Ray, a shopkeeper on Saturday night. He was reportedly assaulted Friday evening after which he had filed the FIR.The meeting also agreed that the FIR filed against the DMC chairman will be withdrawn by the complainant and that those involved in the attack on the house of Shankar Ray would tender apology. It was also agreed that the administration would conduct a high level inquiry into the shooting incident on Saturday evening when the DMC chairman Khekaho Assumi was injured. In the interest of peace and tranquility in Dimapur, the two public leaders also urged all sections to remain calm and desist from further provocation.
Meanwhile, according to official sources, section 144 Cr PC promulgated in Dimapur on Saturday night would remain in force till Monday 7 a.m.
DCC disowns bandh
Clarifying on the bandh called by some members from the business community, Dimapur Chamber of Commerce (DCC) president Kasheto, on Sunday, clarified that the bandh was not approved by the DCC and at the same time appealed to all the business community to keep their shops open. “Business should not be affected and should resume as normal” he added. He also described the shooting incident as “a cowardly act” and urged all the right thinking citizens to condemn such incidents.Kasheto also further appealed the district administration to arrest the culprits at the earliest.
Meanwhile addressing a press meet in District Hospital, DMC chairman Khekaho Assumi informed that an FIR has already been filed with the East P.S.against those reportedly involved in Saturday evening’s shooting incident. This was later confirmed by the OC, East PS.
Khekaho who was hospitalized for injury on the left calf after the shooting incident on Saturday in the District Hospital, said that he has decided to remain aloof and calm after the Saturday night incident. He also candidly stated that a huge mob had gathered for retaliation but was however restrained after his fervors appeal. “Things would have gone out of control had I not intervened” ha said.
He also further appealed to the district administration, DMC Councilors and media to help in finding out the culprits responsible for the incident.
DMC opposes bandh
Reacting to news reports that a section of the business community in Dimapur had decided to resort to bandh if the responsible authorities failed to arrest the DMC chairperson for allegedly assaulting a businessman, the DMC has resolved that no section of the society would be allowed to call for bandh which might obstruct the peace and tranquility of the city. DMC, deputy chairperson in a statement said that the decision was taken during an emergency meeting held on Sunday to discuss the issue.
The DMC has appealed the citizens to co-operate with the civic body. Meanwhile, the DMC has also convened an emergency meeting at its conference hall on Monday at 10 a.m to discuss the “life attempt” on its chairperson on Friday. All DMC councillirs have been requested to attend the meeting the meeting.
ANMTCF condemns
All Nagaland Municipal and Town Council Forum (ANMTCF) has vehemently condemned the assassination attempt on Khekaho Assumi, chairperson of Dimapur Municipal Council cum convenor of ANMTCF on November 7. Stating that the attempt was shocking, despicable, without any qualms and with total disrespect for human lives, the ANMCTF co-convenor Vipopal Kintso and secretary Kopota Chakhesang in a note said that the cowardly act of ‘terrorism and violence had no place in our present society’ and was with a motive of creating disharmony and chaos and unwillingness to let peace and advancement reign.
The note further said issues could always resolved issues in a civilized manner without resorting to such act of barbarism and called upon the authorities to leave no stone unturned in apprehending the culprits and awarding exemplary punishment to the assassins so as to deter such acts of violence in the future.
The NPF Dimapur division has also strongly condemned the assassination bid on Khekaho Assumi and said while the Nagas are crying for peace and tranquility and the atmosphere was improving, such unwarranted acts should not be repeated.
