Congress Legislature Party (CLP) has expressed shock over the comments made by the home minister Imkong L. Imchen with regard to collection of money by the underground factions.
Parliamentary secretary to CLP, C. Apok Jamir said the issue was discussed certain during its meeting on December 8 in Kohima and also took serious note of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Apok said cease fire agreement was not a license to collect money from the public.
He said that the revised text of the Ceasefire Ground Rules 2001 clearly stated that ‘forcible collection of money or essential supplies and intimidation of individuals’ shall be refrained from. He said that demanding transparency and accountability in money collection from those other than the state agencies was “nothing short of legalizing their act.” Apok said it was “ridiculous” to approve money collection on one side while, seeking the opinion of the Nagas on whether it should be stopped totally.
He said Imchen’s statements during the last couple of weeks was not only irresponsible but highly irregular adding “his flip-flop careless utterances have been constant embarrassment to the people of Nagaland giving his position.”
Apok said that the Naga political issue was an entirely different problem that should not be mixed up with the law and order problem and added that the Joint Legislature Forum (JLF) has nothing to do with the government’s responsibility of tackling law and order problem.
Stating that the government has its own functions and duties, the CLP said the functions and duties of the government should not be shifted to the civil societies and NGOs.
In absence of material evidence to support his (Imchen) arguments, the CLP said the home minister had turned to “vindictive personal attacks” on others that were not only degrading but also “unbecoming” of the responsible chair he holds.
The parliamentary secretary to CLP said Imchen cannot wash off his hands from his responsibilities as the home minister by admitting shortcomings and acknowledging his ignorance in public. The CLP demanded that Imchen “act or relinquish.”
Apok also asserted that when the failures and mistakes of the government were pointed out by NPCC as responsible Opposition party, the responses has been more of personal attacks rather than taking heed to its observations.
