Forest minister on environment protection

Minister for forest & environment, M.C Konyak said management of environment in the state was guided by national forest policy, 1988 and national environment policy 2006.
Replying to a starred question at the 9th Session of the 11th NLA on Friday, Konyak said the efforts of the department to prevent environment degradation were executed through various schemes such as intensification of forest management, national afforestation programme etc.
The Nagaland Pollution Control Board also undertakes activities to monitor and control environmental pollution, he said and added the department was also coordinating the preparation of the State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC) involving numerous departments.
The minister also said that as part of its afforestation programme, the department has weaned away shifting cultivators by providing them the alternative of tree farming/agro-forestry as one of the objectives.
“Agriculture and allied department also have policies to reduce shifting cultivation system by adopting settled and permanent cultivation system wherever feasible”, he said.
