Concerned over reports of food grains rotting in some parts of the country, ministry of consumer affairs, food & public distribution has directed senior officials to undertake tours within the next two-three weeks to review the status of offtake of food grains allocated Public Distribution System (PDS) and safe storage of the procured foodgrains. Dr. D.K. Bhalla, joint secretary has been asked to undertake tour to Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura, a PIB communiqué stated. The officials have been asked to review district-wise offtake of allocation of food grains during their visits and ensure immediate improvement of overall offtake position. The officials have also been directed to inspect distribution centres and to see that PDS food grains are easily available in all the parts of the states. The release informed that during these special tours, the officials would also inspect go-downs of FCI and other procurement agencies to review the storage management so that the quality control is maintained at any cost. Ministry officials also admitted that that the government was fully aware of the gravity of the situation and immediate measures were being taken to improve overall offtake and storage of food grains.
