Forum for Naga Reconciliation convenor Rev. Dr. Wati Aier received the 2011 Baptist World Alliance 2011(BWA)Denton and Janice Lotz Human Rights Award on July 9 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Dr Wati who received the award on stage with his wife Alongla,in his speech, also acknowledge the roles played by others in the Naga peace process, including BWA, APBF, the Council of Baptist Churches in North East India, Naga Baptists and others to broker peace in the longest lasting conflicts in recent history. Dr Wati also said Nagas have been yearning for peace. BWA president John Upton in his speech spoke of his admiration of the life and work of Dr Wati saying he did it for Christ and his people. The button of the FNR was also released at BWA gathering. The Denton and Janice Lotz award is given annually to an individual engaged in significant and effective activities to secure, protect, restore or preserve human rights. Dr Wati Aier convenor of Forum for Naga Reconciliation formed in 2008, was recognized for helping broker peace between three Naga political groups in Nagaland which have been in conflict with each other and with the government of India over autonomy and sovereignty for Nagaland state and the Nagas, stated a release received here. The release said Dr Wati also help found a liberal arts junior college program for Karen refugees from Myanmar in the Mae Le refugee camp in Thailang near the border with Myanmar besides playing a role in the launch of Kawthoolei Karen Baptist Bible School and Collge in the same camp where graduates from OTS, Bade are the main teachers. The release gave a statistical flashback stating the between 1992 and 2009 there were more than 2330 insurgency-related fatalities in Nagaland as a result of the longstanding dispute of more than fifty years. It stated that the fatalities arose out of “exceptionally tight security” imposed on Nagaland by the government of India with “multiple checkpoints scattered throughout the state”. It also noted that international visitors were required to obtain special permits to enter or move around Nagaland.
