Western Sumi Hoho Tuesday announced that it has agreed to keep in abeyance its decision to remove “war gates” at Beisumpuikam village by July 27 for an indefinite period following the state government’s assurance that it would initiate action to remove the gates.
WSH president L. K. Achumi and secretary Vikato Shikhu said the consultative meeting was held with state government representative Azheto Zhimomi MLA & Advisor Sericulture and Cooperation and the hoho at its office, Chekiye village July 26.
The meeting discussed issues related with the WSH’s resolution to remove ‘war gate’ at Beisumpuikam village on or before July 27 following government’s failure to act within 15 days from July 3 on its 6-point demand.
During the meeting, the hoho said Azheto Zhimomi MLA & advisor sericulture and cooperation who represented state government, asked the hoho to withdraw its resolution to remove “War Gates” at Beisumpuikam. The signatories said Azheto assured the hoho that the government would initiate action to remove the gates. In view of the assurances made by the government representative, WSH said it “unanimously agreed” to keep in abeyance its decision to remove gates for an indefinite period of time.
BVC slams WSH ‘war gates’ remark
Beisumpuikam village council Tuesday vehemently opposed “defamatory remarks” made by the Westren Sumi Hoho on the village gate.
Beisumpuikam village GB Sinlak Zeliang and council secretary Lungyibuing said they were “greatly concerned” over the proposed march of “Sema tribesmen in thousands to demolish the village gate on July 27”. They said such a move would only “inflate rivalry and create hostile conditions” and pose a threat to sovereignty of Naga village system. They expressed hope that state government would uphold the “sanctity of our recognized village.”
While maintaining that Western Sumi Hoho should accept the reality that Beisumpuikam was a recognized village, the signatories said WSH should not “compare us with Inavi encroachers.”
They asserted “Ntakgki is not in Zunheboto, it is Peren district and WSH has no right to interfere in the Zeliangrong areas.” They also affirmed that only Beisumpuikam had the rights to protect the Ntangki national park from “all illegal activities and encroachments.” They further demanded that all those accused in the May 28 shooting on Beisumpuikam villagers be arrested.
The signatories reminded that the tolerance and peaceful attitude exhibited by the village council of Beisumpuikam “should not be taken for granted.”
“Repute of the intellectual Semas who has a standing and respect in the Naga society should not be put to stake in the hasty decisions to justify the illegal activities of a handful of men,” they said.
They also maintained that there should be no dispute or confusion on village gate, as it was the sentinel of the Naga customs in Beisumpuikam. The signatories also said that WSH, as a part of Naga fraternity, should have been courteousy to show respect to the customs.
Meanwhile, Beisumpuikam has requested all to also maintain restrain in the manner in which they addressed Beisumpuikam villagers adding, as it would amount to insulting the whole Zeliangrongs. They said the village was “spell bound to protect and safeguard Ntangki national park in any cost.”
