Kohima Press Club has condemned the incident on July 30 night, when armed miscreants accosted, threatened then robbed two journalists of Nagaland Post at Circular Road near Metro Hospital while on their way home. KPC president K.V.Nurumi and vice president Eric Machieo in a joint statement termed the act as “uncivilized” and deserving condemnation by all sections of society. KPC regretted that that while the media in Nagaland was functioning under extreme pressure from different sections, some elements failed to understand the stress that media persons had to undergo every day. The signatories questioned the motive behind that incident involving two journalists that included a lady, as to whether it was pre-planned or just a case of robbery. Whatever be the motive, KPC asserted , that no amount of explanation could justify such an act which it said was “ a direct challenge to the freedom of press ”by “ignorant and errant cadres of the faction as claimed by the perpetrators of the crime.” KPC said the incident was not an isolated one where members of the fourth estate were targeted as there had been several such incidents in the past even by members of underground outfits.KPC however regretted, that “little or nothing has been done” to ensure security of the press community of the state whose members serve people even at risk on their lives. KPC demanded that the law enforcement agencies in Dimapur bring to book those involved in the incident at the earliest and also asked the state government to seriously look into the security aspects of the media fraternity.
