Konyak organisations condemn ‘inhuman act’

The Konyak Union Kohima (KUK) Konyak  Nyupuh Sheko Khong Kohima (KNSK Kohima unit) and Konyak Students’ Union Kohima (KSUK) held a joint meeting on August 2 in connection with the abuse of a nine year old Konyak girl child Lemmon Konyak residing as a  domestic help with a particular Naga family in Kohima.
In a release KNSK, Kohima Unit stated that on July 31 (Sunday) morning the minor child was found crying and loitering around Bayavü area by one Manipuri brother who on seeing that the child was a Naga handed over the child to a Lotha family where she was taken care of. And on enquiry, finding that she belonged to Konyak community contacted their Konyak friend, who in turn informed and handed over the child to the custody of the KNSK Kohima unit.
The release informed that the KNSK on questioning the child found out that she had run away because she was beaten by the wife of the concerned family. On physical check, the child’s body bore bruises of being mercilessly beaten.
It also informed that the KUK, KNSK and KSUK summoned the concerned family with whom the child had been residing. On questioning, they admitted that they had committed the crime.
KUK, KNSK and KSUK was deeply shocked and hurt by the incident and decided to take the case to higher authority for legal action. But as the concerned family asked for forgiveness, we as Christian brothers and sisters accepted their apology, the release stated. The organizations strongly condemned such “inhuman act” and warned that strong actions will be taken against any found mistreating children from the Konyak community kept as domestic help in their homes.
Further, KUK,KNSK and KSUK expressed their appreciation to the Manipuri brother and Mr & Mrs Chumthungo Ezung for their gesture and saving the child.
