Reacting to the news item ‘TTC to boycott Metemniu cum cultural show’ over land dispute, published in the local dailies on August 5, Shamator Village Council (SVC) Friday clarified that there was no such land dispute at Shamator town as alleged by Tikhir Tribal Council joint secretary, Mark Murekiu. SVC chairman, Wongtsukiu reminded that Shamator town was established in the year 1954, freely donated unconditionally to establish the headquarter of Yimchungrus and government administration.
SVC stated that on September 7, 2010, Shamator Village Council, Leangkongru Village Council and Wapher Village Council submitted a representation to the state government to revoke the government order no. CN/CON (SMTR) 07, dated Kohima the 4th Jan 2007 and no action was taken by the government so far. SVC requested the state government to nullify the government order regarding the land dispute in order to maintain peace and harmony in the region.
TSU on boycott: Meanwhile, president Tikhir Students Union (TSU) said boycotting ‘Metemniu cum Cultural Show’, to be held at Shamator Town from August 6 to 7, was peaceful and non-violent.
He however said that “If it is a usual local Metemniu Festival, we will not agitate, but if it is a government sponsored Cultural Show, then there should have been a consensus, as the land belonged to Tikhirs.” He also referred to the 2007 government notification saying, “Shamator a disputed land.”
Further, he said the ongoing peaceful agitation at three location viz. Anatonger, Sikiur and Waphure villages would continue till they (TSU) receive a written letter from DC Tuensang and EAC Shamator. He said there was no road blockade and that there will be free flow of passage except for those who are to attend the Metemniu cum cultural show at Shamator.
