DAN government in Nagaland finds itself in a no-win situation after Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) snubbed the recommendation made to the government of India for granting Autonomous Council under the Sixth Schedule of the constitution of India to the four districts of Mon, Tuensang, Longleng and Kiphire- covered under ENPO.
Though ENPO expressed appreciation of the DAN government’s decision, it however reiterated that there would be no climb down over its demand for statehood (Frontier Nagaland).
In the light of the rejection of its recommendations, DAN cabinet and some legislators led by chief minister Neiphiu Rio have are reportedly going to New Delhi to discuss the deadlock with union prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh and home minister P.C. Chidambaram. The state cabinet delegation is likely to meet Home Minister and Prime Minister on August 9 and 10.
Based on the recommendation of a high powered committee set up to look into the demand of Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation for a separate ‘Frontier Nagaland’ state the cabinet decided to recommend granting of autonomous council to the areas of ENPO.
It was also learnt that some of the legislators from the ENPO areas held a meeting at DUDA guest house here, with various organizations of the ENPO areas Wednesday in an attempt to break the deadlock with ENPO.
However, sources said the meeting proved inconclusive and that fresh attempts would be made soon.
