Rajya Sabha was informed on Tuesday about the incidents of damage to crops and human life by wild elephants occur in all the elephant range States in the country, including Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Environment and Forests (independent charge) Jayanthi Natarajan in a written reply to a question by Dr. T. Subbarami Reddy in Rajya Sabha.
The Minister also informed the house that a total of Rs.84.75 lakh have been released to Nagaland during the last three years and gave the break up- details Rs.17.45 lakh in 2008-09, Rs. 26.00 lakh in 2009-2010 and Rs. 41.30 lakh -2010-11.
She also said that as per routine, during the current financial year also, the Ministry has received proposals from the State Governments of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Kerala, Orissa, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal for financial assistance under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme “Project Elephant”.
Further the Minister said that the concerned State Governments are given financial assistance by the Ministry under its CSS “Project Elephant” inter-alia, for mitigation of human-elephant conflicts in shape of grant of ex-gratia for damage to crops due to depredation by wild elephants, and also for loss of life, and injury to humans.
Assistance is also provided for preventing depredation of crops by elephants by supporting erection of electric fences, digging of elephant proof trenches, hiring of Kunki elephants to scare away problematic wild elephants, setting up of anti-depredation squads and procurement of fire crackers to drive away elephants, etc.
