Yimchungru Tribal Council (YTC) along with around 10,000 people from various organization of the Yimchungru tribe staged a silent procession on Friday at Tuensang town demanding the state government to arrest Topan and Mark Murekiu, president and joint secretary of the Tikhir Tribal Council (TTC) and to officially declare TTC as an illegal organization.
An ultimatum was also submitted at the DC’s office, Tuensang addressed to the chief secretary, Nagaland.
YTC and Yimchungru Akheru Arih ako, in a joint ultimatum urged the government to book Topan and Mark under relevant sections of the law and to officially declare the TTC as an illegal organization on or before August 20, 2011. Failing which, the people of Yimchungru community shall be compelled to take its own course of action as deemed fit which, the concerned authority shall be solely held responsible, the ultimatum added.
It was also informed that the procession was staged as a symbol of resentment by the Yimchungru organizations over the alleged ‘illegal activities’ of the TTC—“intimidation, forgery, illegal assembly, public nuisance, threatening and kidnapping, infringement of cultural rights, attempt to spoil public peace and tranquility, malicious obstruction of developmental activities, false allegations/speaking lies, character assassination of YTC and public leaders by the TTC.”
Some of the placards also read: ‘Ban Tikhir Tribal Council, terrorist organization’, ‘arrest Topan, Mark Murekiu, the terrorist leaders’, ‘stop high way blockade’, ‘stop threatening and kidnapping’, ‘stop interfering in the village developmental activities’, ‘Divert highway 202 from Anatonger village’
