Drawing attention to purported statement of NPF president and minister for UD&HE, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu over women reservation issue, the NPCC Tuesday said the remark was nothing but “a mockery and an excuse” for failing to implement the Nagaland Municipal and Town Council Act so far.
Dr. Shürhozelie reportedly said that government has “better plan” with regard to 33% women reservation in the civic bodies that instead of allowing the womenfolk to face election, the NPF-led government was proposing to nominate 33% of women.

“It is only to eye wash the people on the failure of the government for implementing the 33% Women Reservation Act,” said NPCC president S.I. Jamir in a statement.
According to state Congress chief, the fact that the Act being passed in the Parliament meant it was mandatory for every state government to implement the same for which the NLA accordingly passed the Bill.

However, he said owing to the “negative electoral calculation” for the NPF- led government, the Act have not been implemented till now.
S.I. Jamir said Dr. Shürhozelie’s comment that government was contemplating to amend the Act was “too childish”.
He said without implementing the Act, how could the government “possibly be contemplating to amend the same Act that was passed by it not so long ago?”
He asked if the Act cannot be implemented, then why was it passed in the assembly in the first place.

“No political party can play hide and seek policy because no political party can take the people for granted for its selfish and whimsical interest only nor can the Government of the day hijack the people for its eye only for self aggrandizement,” NPCC president remarked.
He further alleged that Shürhozelie’s comment was “the policy of the Neiphiu Rio’s NPF and his coterie which includes Shürhozelie among others.”
The Congress president said it did not reflect the policy of the cabinet nor did it reflect the government.

Further, he said issue being dragged in the Court by NMA only served “this personalize policy since it has become an excuse for people like Rio and Shürhozelie to delay the implementation of the Act thereby depriving the constitutional rights of our women folk”. He wondered when would the court give its final ruling and in whose favour.
