A team of officials from the Horticulture department consisting of Dr. N. Benjong Aier, Mission Director (HTM), Pawan Kumar joint director, horticulture and Dr. Moa Walling, DHO, Phek led by R. Khing, Parliamentary Secretary (Horticulture) went on an exposure tour to Europe.
The tour was sponsored by the ministry of agriculture, government of India, Horticulture division under Horticulture Technology Mission.
According to mission director (HTM) Dr. N. Benjong Aier, the team is presently touring Switzerland, Austria and Italy. The officials visited many hi-tech green houses (Fruit Nurseries and Flowers), apple orchards, plum orchards, vegetable farms and cold chain supply systems, etc.
Among the different projects visited included Hi-tech green house in Interlaken (Switzerland), apple and plum orchards in Luzerne (Switzerland), apple orchard in Austria and the cold chain marketing system run by the Coop’s and the Migro’s Marketing outlets at Interlaken and Luzerne.
The topography is mountainous so the people practice agri-horti-dairy farming system adopting farm mechanisation, added Aier. Fruits, vegetables and products of maize, wheat and dairy are the main food for the people, informed the mission director.
