In the aftermath of Friday’s mayhem and subsequent three- day ultimatum served on home minister by KCCI, a meeting between members of KCCI and Kohima district administration including DC and SP Kohima was held to thrash out a solution Saturday at DC’s conference Hall.
Both DC and SP Kohima, when contacted, said the meeting went well yet KCCI officials reportedly stated they would have discussion over the matter with their other members. SP Kohima R. Tetseo said administration and police have apologized for the inconvenience and excesses committed to the business community, innocent public and students at Kohima Friday. Police had insisted that everything was carried out as per orders of the magistrate and shop closure was called for the safety of business community and the public.
Earlier, DGP K. Kire admitted that there might be excesses, but not as reported in the media. While defending the action of the police force on the closure of shops and business establishments that they were only performing their duty as asked by the magistrate present, Kire acknowledged that the personnel could have gone a “little excess” in the process. He said all 13 detained agitators were released on personal bond the same evening.
KCCI: Meanwhile, the KCCI said today’s meeting proved to be “inconclusive” and the business community stood firm on the demands as submitted in the memorandum, though it acknowledged the apology tendered by officials. It reiterated that disciplinary action be taken against erring police personnel for excessive abuse and trauma caused to innocent traders and public at large.
In the meantime, the KCCI has requested the public to bear with the business community in the event of failure of dialogue with the government and proceed with closure of all business activity.
