Wokha Village Council (WVC) and its subordinate organizations (women, youth and student bodies) have demanded action by Nagaland and Assam governments in connection with the August 15 incident at Merapani.
A joint statement issued by WVC chairman Yanasao and secretary Nlongtsu Tungoe pointed out that after the incident at Lakhuti on August 14, wherein one Soru Bhai Ali was allegedly murdered his business partner Habib Ali, there had been also been an attempt on the life of Y. Lotha of Wokha village. WVC said Y. Lotha, a resident of Merapani for the past 15 years, was an honest social worker for peace in border area and that his life was attempted because of rumours.
It stated that one Rakit Hamid led the mob that made an attempt on Lotha’s life and also who damaged properties amounting to lakhs of rupees such as – heavy and light vehicles, a workshop in the compound and marble slabs of RCC building under construction. WVC said Y.Lotha was seriously injured while trying to escape the mob, resulting in extensive operation on his left knee.
In view of the above, the organizations of Wokha village demanded action against perpetrators by both the state governments, particularly administration and law enforcing agencies of Wokha and Golaghat districts. They also demanded immediate arrest of Rakit Hamid and those involved and book them as per law besides compensation for the loss of properties caused to Y.Lotha.
They also demanded that neutral forces be posted along the border areas so as to be impartial to people living on both sides of the borders. They further appealed to all people to maintain peace and harmony in the border area for peaceful co-existence and to maintain age-old friendship.
