Dr. S. C. Jamir. (DPRO)District Administration and medical fraternity of Mokokchung observed the 50th death anniversary of Dr. Imkongliba, the first president of Nagaland People’s Convention (NPC) at the town hall where Dr. S C Jamir, former Governor of Goa and Maharashtra who was also the joint secretary of the NPC, was the special guest on the occasion.
In his speech, Dr. Jamir enlightened the gathering about the history of the early Naga political issues regarding the formation of NNC under the leadership of T. Aliba Imti, which brought together people who shared a common dream of Nagas designing the future by themselves.
Dr. S.C. Jamir also pointed out that Nagas started their movement for independence even before India got independence but that after they were subjugated, the plight of the Nagas were left ‘unseen, unheard and uncared by the world’.
He said that during those dark days in the Naga Hills, the NPC was formed to give Nagas a hope. He also said that the NPC was not only concerned about the dark situation but went on to demand a Naga statehood. He said it would have been a shame for Nagas, had NPC not pressed for statehood, as Naga Hills would have been relegated back to Assam state as a district.
Dr. Jamir also said that many Nagas talked as if he was solely responsible for the creation of Nagaland statehood when he was “just a mere joint secretary” in the NPC. Dr. Jamir maintained that statehood was the only option for the Nagas at that time, in order to save the people from further sufferings.
He also asserted that the costliest state will be Nagaland because precious blood has been sacrificed including the blood of Dr. Imkongliba.
Dr. Jamir said that during the NPC Days when they were toiling hard for the attainment of statehood, the only goal was to bring peace and prosperity to the land. However, looking at the present scenario, Jamir lamented that the land is filled with corruption and every unimaginable problems. He said that nowadays “the younger Naga generations only look at the fruit unlike the older generation, who looked at the roots before looking at the fruit.”
Mokokchung D.C Lithrongla G. Chishi, Ao Senden general secretary Nungsang Jamir and AKM leaders also spoke. Dr. Imkongliba’s relatives who spoke at the function thanked the administration and Senden for honouring Dr. Imkongliba. CTC enacted a play. C. Apok Jamir, MLA also attended the function and various leaders from different communities were also present at the function.
