Minister for school education and SCERT, Nyeiwang Konyak on Thursday graced the state level national role play and folk dance competition organized by the Adolescence Education Cell, SCERT Kohima.
Addressing the gathering, the minister said adolescence education was programmed to ensure that each adolescent student in the state was empowered to face challenges. Stating adolescence as a crucial period, he said that one should be equipped with adequate life skills required to protect oneself from dangers.
Dwelling on the two categories of competition, Nyeiwang Konyak said role play and folk dance competitions were co-curricular activities organized throughout the country under the National Population Education Project, NCERT.
He maintained that role play was designed to provide opportunities to students to gain experiential learning for life skill development and apply them in real life situations; while folk dance competition is to develop skills related to adolescence reproductive and sexual health through folk culture as a medium.
In the role play category, themes of play included ‘healthy relations among adolescents’, ‘challenges of adolescents’, HIV and AIDS-stigma and vulnerability among adolescents’ and ‘causes and impact of drug abuse’. Government High School Satakha from Zunheboto district was adjudged the winner, followed by GHS Jalukie, Peren district and GHSS Mon district. While in folk dance, GHS Heninkunglwa, Peren district was the winner and GHS Tening, Peren district, the runners-up.
Other participating schools in the competitions were GHS Longleng and GHSS Peren. Judges for the competitions were Tuolie Seleyi, Reader SCERT; Moalong Imty, TRA, SCERT; Peter Phewhuo, TRA, SCERT. Prizes were distributed by Nini Meru, chairperson, NBSE.
The role play and folk dance competition began at school level in each district where district winning schools participated in Thursday’s competition. Winners of the competition will compete in the regional level and then at the national level.
