After all inter-district check gates were dismantled, sections of the business community want them to be reestablished but on the condition that no illegal collection should be made. While other business communities have so far not spoken, spokesperson of Kohima Chamber of Commerce and Industries Neingulie Nakhro was of the view that check gates were needed to for public security and to prevent escape of criminals after committing crimes.
He felt the government misunderstood public ire against illegal gate collections by removing them. President of Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organization (NVCO) advocate Kezhokhoto Savi reiterated that check gates were misused rather than for security reasons where departments make illegal collections. He felt that if check gates were to be re-established, the government should ensure that no collections were made and no one harassed.
Though illegal gate collections have stopped, yet consumers continue to suffer from rising prices of commodities. Contradicting police department’s report stating that prices of liquor have drastically come down, Savi said some consumers asserted that liquor prices have actually risen.
