Meriyani Ovung and Lotsani Ezung of DBHSS won the champion’s trophy of the second Wokha district inter-school math olympiad here at the DBHSS Youth Centre, Wokha Friday.
In this edition of the Kyong Hungjantaren Ekhüng (KHE)-organized annual math olympiad, 15 two-member teams from various schools in the district vied for top honors through five rounds of hard quizzing. Loyilo Odyuo and Renbemo Mozhui, and Thungrhoni Kikon and Nzanmongi Kikon, both teams from LMS, walked away with the second and third prizes respectively. First, second and third prize winners were also awarded cash and certificates while all participants were presented with certificates of participation.
Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Wokha ADC Anthony Ngullie said while math as a subject conjured up daunting images of numbers and formulae for the young minds, basic mathematical facts and figures were a part and parcel of our everyday lives’ applications, and therein was the need and importance for students to take up math in a serious way. While on the same topic, Ngullie advised the students to keep their spirits high and to never give up on anything in life.
Commenting on the structure of the competition (which is based on the syllabi of Class IX and X board exams), Ngullie observed that the students ought to do justice to the competition and not waste the opportunity given to do well in their board exams later. With competitions such as the one being conducted, Ngullie further hoped that many students from the district would secure distinctions not only in math but also find places in the top 10 and 20 positions in future board exams.
The chief guest, who is also the chairman of Wokha district education committee, disclosed that the committee would soon start touring schools in the district with a view to find solutions towards improving the district’s ranking in the pass percentage in the board exams which was dismally low at 10th place overall out of 11 districts in the state.
Earlier, WTBC associate pastor Konbemo Kikon offered invocation while KHE chairmen Y. Likhao Humtsoe welcomed everyone to the competition at a short function chaired by Wokha GHSS subject teacher Yanthunglo Kikon. Standard VI and VII students of DBHSS welcomed the chief guest with a traditional song while an all-girls band from Mt. Carmel School, Wokha village presented a special number.
Meanwhile the KHE has expressed its gratitude to Class 1 contractor Y. Bankathung Lotha for sponsoring the champion’s trophy, LMS headmaster Sujay Dey for being the quizmaster at the math olympiad, and all concerned math teachers of winning teams for their hard work proving praiseworthy.
