Mickey Rooney sues stepson

Rooney, whose movie career stretches from 1927 to this year, claims he was tricked into thinking he had no money and would therefore have to continue acting.
The star filed a legal complaint in a Los Angeles court against his stepson Christopher Aber, his stepson’s wife Christina Aber, and others.
He accuses them of “elder abuse,” breach of fiduciary trust, fraud and other alleged crimes stretching back a decade.

According to the nonagenarian actor Mr Aber, 52, used his money to buy two Mercedes, a Porsche and another $100,000 sports car.
Mr Rooney claims his relative also applied for and used credit cards in his name to fund an extravagant lifestyle which included frequenting expensive restaurants.
The legal complaint said: “While Chris instilled fear in Mickey and kept him in poverty, Chris took advantage of his unfettered access to Mickey’s income.

“Chris consistently paid himself a generous salary from Mickey’s earnings, took ‘advances’ on his salary, and spent Mickey’s money as if it were his own.” The actor claims his stepson also re-routed his post and took control of his residual payments for film appearances which amounted to about $12,000 a month.
Mr Rooney said he was made to take up acting jobs after being told he would lose his house and medical benefits if he did not continue to earn an income.

Having been born Joseph Yule Jr in New York, Mr Rooney was a child actor who became a Hollywood star as a teenager when he began playing the character “Andy Hardy” in a series of hugely popular comedies about American family life.
He has been nominated for an Oscar four times and was given an honorary Oscar for “lifetime achievement” in 1983. He is now one of the last surviving stars from the 1930s Hollywood era.
